<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device in which unprecedented decoration expressions are achieved. <P>SOLUTION: In the illumination device which is composed of a linear side face emitting type light transmitting body 3, a light source 4 arranged at least at one end of the light transmitting body 3, and a base material 1 consisting of a transparent material and formed in a plate shape, and in which the light emitted from the light transmitting body 3 is introduced into the base material 1, the light emitted from the light transmitting body 3 is introduced into the base material 1 so as to become nearly parallel with the main face of the base material 1, and at least at one part of the side face of the base material 1, a tilted part 1a tilted against the normal line of the main face is installed at this illumination device. At least in one part of the main face in the base material 1, a recess 1b having a cross section of a nearly triangular shape or a trapezoidal shape is installed at this illumination device. Depth of the recess increases as a distance from the light transmitting body 3 goes in this illumination device.
