PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing an optical film which provides a wide and thin optical film having an improved elastic modulus, strength and ease of handling without use of special additives or limited raw materials in manufacturing a wide and thin optical film by a solution casting method employing a drum support, an optical film obtained thereby, a polarizing plate and a liquid crystal display. SOLUTION: The method is for manufacturing a thin optical film with a solution casting production apparatus and includes the casting process of casting a dope consisting of a raw-material resin dissolved in a solvent onto a drum support from a die to form a web and, after peeling of the web from the drum support, at least the drawing and winding process. The amount of the residual solvent in the lateral direction of the web is made to be higher in the central part than in end pars in the period from the peeling with the drum support to the initiation of drawing in the drawing process.
