A network comprises a plurality of processing apparatus, at least two of the processing apparatus being games control terminals, each games control terminal being operable to transmit or receive or render audio data to and from other games control terminals. The network provides controlling logic operable to determine whether the games control terminals may perform an audio-communication-task and logic operable to provide a game environment, an audio-communication-task being one or more of the transmission or receiving of audio data to or from one games control terminal to another games control terminal or the rendering of received audio data. The determination is dependent upon a game status associated with at least one of the games control terminals and/or at least one operator of a games control terminal. The game status comprises one or more associations made between communication-items found within the game environment and operators. Therefore the player whose character collects a communication item within a game environment may be the only player who can transmit voice data, such as speech, to the other players in the network. Other factors may influence the game status including position, within the game environment, distance between characters, and communication enabling actions. |
