A separator for a direct methanol fuel cell is provided to be operated regardless of the spatial position thereof, and to separate air from water of a cathode or separate carbon dioxide from an anode cycle. A separator(10) for a direct methanol fuel cell is configured to separate a liquid/gas mixture. The separator has a closed channel. A sectional wall of the channel consists of a partially or wholly hydrophobic and gas-permeable membrane(18). A cross-sectional area of the channel continuously or gradually tapers down from an inlet to an outlet(22). Sections of the channel wall which is not formed of the membrane are a one-piece machined body(12).
