A transmission mode selecting device in a multi-antenna system and a method therefore are provided to selectively use a transmission mode according to channel environments, thereby reducing the loss of capacity gains of the system as increasing the capacity gains. A receiver(201) receives signals through at least two antennas. A channel estimator(207) confirms channel properties with a transmission end by using the received signals. A transmission mode determiner(209) determines a multi-antenna transmission mode by considering the channel properties. The transmission mode determiner determines one of a diversity mode and a spatial multiplexing mode as the multi-antenna transmission mode by considering the channel properties confirmed in the channel estimator.
