A system for providing information to a vehicle, the system comprising: a plurality of control signal units located in or near respective traffic control signals; a vehicle unit located in or on a vehicle; and an information server operable to communicate with each of the control signal units and with the vehicle unit, wherein the information server is operable, on receipt of a request from the vehicle unit relating to a traffic control signal, to transmit to the vehicle unit information relating to the current and/or expected future status of the traffic control signal.
