The method involves providing wheel slide protection units (1) that are equally operative at a wheel rim (10). Wheel slide protection parts (2) are pivoted in a wheel arch region by the wheel slide protection units for driving on smooth or snow-covered roads. The parts are retracted in a circumferential direction near to a wheel side and parallel to the wheel side up to a smaller diameter than an operative tire diameter for driving on normal road. Application and retraction of the wheel slide protection take place by remote operation during driving or by hand with a stationary vehicle. An independent claim is also included for a device for wheel slide protection of a motor vehicle.
