PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic control device enabling to initialize a volatile memory more efficiently by determining whether the volatile memory is required to be initialized or not in accordance with the condition of supplying power to the volatile memory. SOLUTION: The electronic control device comprises an initialization prohibiting means using a control program stored in a program memory 200a for making a second volatile memory initializing means effective in the first operation right after an ignition switch 104 is on, when determining that a microprocessor 200 is involved in a sub power supply failure, in accordance with a sub power supply failure signal 302 generated by a battery wire breakage detecting circuit 204, and for prohibiting the operation of the second volatile memory initializing means when the sub power supply failure signal is generated in the condition that the ignition switch is on.
