PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems that first data cannot be extracted appropriately when an inertia mode is entered within the next ECC block after entering a direct detection mode between ECC blocks when reproducing a format where synchronization signals are not continued across the ECC blocks. SOLUTION: If a second special signal S2 is detected when the count value of a sector counter reaches "m", a synchronization signal detection means enters the direct detection mode from the inertia mode. After that, the synchronization signal detection means shifts from the direct detection mode to the inertia mode when a first special signal S1 is detected. Thus, the synchronization signal detection means shifts from the inertia mode to the direct detection mode at the last part of the ECC block without inserting a prescribed number of false synchronization signals in the inertia mode, thus preventing errors from occurring in the first data of the following ECC block and achieving stable operation.
