The invention relates to a light high-strength tuft backing produced of s punlaid material, especially for use as primary or secondary carpet backing, comprising at least one layer of melt-spun synthetic filaments which are so lidified by high-energy water jets. Said tuft backing is characterized by co ntaining a low amount of a thermally activatable binder which is applied ont o the layer of melt-spun filaments in the form of at least one thin layer.
