The device has an electronic component with two different diagnostic modes, where one of the diagnostic modes is temporally unlimited during operation of a motor vehicle and is released automatically. Another diagnostic mode is temporally limited and is released manually by an arbitrary actuation of an electrical switch in the vehicle. A storage area is attached to the latter diagnostic mode, where more data is stored in the latter diagnostic mode than in the former diagnostic mode.
