Provided are a retainer for a ball bearing, which makes it less likely that grease adheres to a seal groove of a rotating ring to prevent a grease leakage from the bearing, and a method of producing the retainer. The retainer (5) for a ball bearing is ring-shaped and has pockets (11) formed at circumferentially arranged positions and retaining balls of the bearing. The inner surface of each pocket (11) is of a concave spherical shape. In the inner surface of each pocket (11) is formed a concave (13) extending from the opening edge on the inner diameter side of the retainer to the outer diameter side. A cross-section of the inner surface of the concave (13), taken in the circumferential direction of the retainer, has a circular arc shape with a curvature radius Rb that is smaller than the curvature radius Ra of the concave spherical surface that is the inner surface of the pocket (11). Coating may be applied to the inner surface of a pocket (11).
