A scanning device for image forming apparatus and an image forming apparatus using the scanning device are provided to operate an APC(Automatic Power Controller) using a voltage generated from a photoelectric converting current by the optical sensor of an HSYNC signal detector, thereby having no need of a photodiode for a monitor and reducing the production cost of the scanning device. A scanning device for an image forming apparatus comprises a laser source(101), an optical output controller, an optical system(103~108), and an HSYNC(Horizontal Synchronization) signal detector. The optical output controller controls output of the laser source. The optical system transmits the laser outputted from the laser source to a photoconductive drum. The HSYNC signal detector includes an optical sensor and performs the HSYNC of the laser incident to the photoconductive drum. The optical output controller controls the optical output from the laser source using a voltage generated from a photoelectric converting current by the optical sensor of the HSYNC signal detector.
