A photographing apparatus for converting an imaging device according to luminance and a converting method thereof are provided to convert into a color photographing unit or a black-and-white photographing unit adaptively to a surrounding luminance through a driving motor, thereby providing a correct image in any luminance in a photographing unit. A photographing apparatus comprises a lens(110), a photographing unit(120), a signal processor(130), an external interface(140), a luminance measuring unit(150), a photographing unit converting motor(160), and a control unit(170). The photographing unit has a first photographing unit(121) and a second photographing unit(123). The first photographing unit photographs a subject to generate a black-and-white image signal. The second photographing unit photographs the subject to generate a color image signal. The photographing unit converting motor moves the position of the photographing unit to enable one of the first and second photographing units to perform photographing. The control unit controls the photographing unit converting motor to move the photographing unit so that one of the first and second photographing units performs photographing according to the luminance of the image signal outputted from the photographing unit.
