The method involves recording a gray-tone image and a distance image from top side (5) of a pig iron stack using an image recording device of an image evaluation system. The gray-tone image and the distance image are combined in the image evaluation system for determining the position of a pig iron (1) from the pig iron stack. The gray-tone image and the distance image are recorded with a scanner, which scans the top side of the pig iron stack with a laser beam. Contour information is obtained from the gray-tone image. An independent claim is included for a loading device for loading a furnace i.e. aluminum-smelting furnace with a pig iron stack.
