The present invention provides methods for identifying genes and proteins that can help regulate proliferative skin conditions caused, at least in part, by Malassezia restricta, including hyper-proliferative skin conditions. The genes identified may be used as markers for the condition onset and progression and to measure efficacy of a treatment. The present invention also provides methods to screen agents that are capable of regulating proliferative skin conditions, including hyper-proliferative skin conditions. The present invention also provides methods of identifying cosmetic and/or therapeutic materials that may cosmetically affect or treat various conditions by regulating the expression and activity of genes and proteins identified.
