PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which has enhanced writing characteristics by an exchange spring effect and can be stably manufactured. SOLUTION: In the perpendicular magnetic recording medium including a non-magnetic substrate, an adhesive layer, a soft magnetic underlayer, a seed layer, an intermediate layer, a magnetic recording layer including at least a perpendicular recording layer, a writing auxiliary layer and a magnetic coupling layer provided between the perpendicular recording layer and the writing auxiliary layer, a protective layer and a lubricant layer, saturation magnetization of the magnetic coupling layer is lower than the saturation magnetization of the writing auxiliary layer, the saturation magnetization of the magnetic coupling layer is 300 kA/m (300 emu/cc) or lower and the magnetic coupling layer has 1 to 3 nm thickness.
