PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device which removes noise from a detected servo signal and makes high-precision tracking servo possible. SOLUTION: The recording and reproducing device conducts tracking servo control while reading a servo signal 10 which is formed so that it may generate optical contrast on the face 9 of a recording medium 2. In addition, the device is provided with; a modulation and radiation means 20 which irradiates the servo signal 10 with light whose intensity is modulated by a modulated wave which is frequency-modulated; a photoelectric conversion means 30 which converts the reflection light from the servo signal 10 to an electric signal; and a synchronous demodulator 15 which subjects the electrical signal to synchronous demodulation with the modulated wave as the reference wave.
