A color printing apparatus and a method for controlling the same are provided to substitute a different color toner when a printing work is stopped due to shortage of a corresponding toner, thereby equalizing the consumption time of all color type of toner and replacing all developing cartridges at a time. A developing unit(30) has developing cartridges for storing toner of plural colors therein. When toner of at least one of the plural colors is short, a controller(102) sets substitute toner according to a residual quantity of the corresponding color toner and then performs the rest of a printing work by using the substitute toner. A storing unit(110) stores information about the minimum quantity of the color toner for the printing work while the controller sets a color toner, of which a residual quantity is not smaller than the minimum quantity, as the substitute toner.
