PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance, for example, the luminance of a display image in a liquid crystal device, such as a three plate type color liquid crystal projector. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device includes a first liquid crystal panel (100R) having a first liquid crystal layer (50R) and modulating first color light (R), a second liquid crystal panel (100G) having a second liquid crystal layer (50R) and modulating second color light (G), and a third liquid crystal panel (100B) having a third liquid crystal layer (50B) and modulating third color light (B). The first liquid crystal layer has a retardation value at which the transmittance to the first color light is higher than the transmittance to each of the second and third color light. The second liquid crystal layer has a retardation value at which the transmittance to the second color light is higher than the transmittance to each of the first and third color light. The third liquid crystal layer has a retardation value at which the transmittance to the third color light is higher than the transmittance to each of the first and second color light.
