PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propose a fire extinguishing method capable of suppressing the enlargement of damage and effectively extinguishing a fire when the fire occurs in the ground. SOLUTION: This invention relates to the method for extinguishing the fire in the ground by drilling a boring hole 1 from a ground surface to a fire source F and spraying a fire extinguishing material 2 to the fire source F via the boring hole 1. A casing 11 having a spray part for spraying the fire extinguishing material 2 is previously inserted to the boring hole 1, and the fire extinguishing material 2 is sprayed to the whole part of the fire source F, while vertically controlling the height of the spray part between the lower end surface and the upper end surface of the fire source F, by moving the casing 11 up and down.
