The mechanism (30) has a storage device (32) for storing position of a vehicle i.e. motor vehicle, seat, and an adjusting device (36) for adjusting the vehicle seat depending on a signal of the storage device. A preferred position of the seat is assigned to a type of a child seat used by a user of the vehicle. An assignment of the preferred position of the seat is stored in the storage device for different child seat types. An input device (40) inputs the used child seat type and initiates an automatic vehicle seating adjustment on a part of the user. An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting a vehicle seat.
