Disclosed is a washing and cleaning device for cylindrical surfaces, particularly printing form cylinders and offset blanket cylinders in a printing machine, comprising a cleaning cloth that is movable with the aid of means of conveyance which are received in a positioning unit having side walls and encompass a fresh cloth roll, a washing roll, and a dirty cloth roll, and a timing mechanism advancing the cleaning cloth such that the dirty cloth roll can pull the cleaning cloth off the fresh cloth roll in several steps via the washing roll and coil said cleaning cloth by forming increasing winding radii. The aim of the invention is to advance the cloth in a steady manner (keep the transport path constant) during the entire period of time that the cloth is used (the time it takes to convey the cleaning cloth from the fresh cloth roll to the dirty cloth roll, i.e. until the cloth supply is used up) and constantly keep the cleaning cloth tensed. Said aim is achieved by the fact that the timing mechanism acts by means of a lift-limited, pneumatically or hydraulically driven linear drive unit (5) acting at least via one of the storage elements (2, 3, 4) which are comprised in one of the side walls (1) of the positioning unit, the lifting movement of said linear drive unit (5) being translatableinto a pulsed rotational movement via a toothed wheel (10) which is disposed on the storage element (4) and comprises a free-wheeling clutch or an overriding clutch. The limit of the lift of the linear drive unit (5) is controlled by means of a curve control device (13, 14) which is variably adjustable according to the changing winding radii of the dirty cloth roll. The inventive washing and cleaning device also comprises an integrated braking device (23 to 28) which acts counter to the pulling direction of the dirty cloth roll and is variably adjustable according to the changing winding radii of the dirty cloth roll.
