A display apparatus for playing media file during auto channel search and a method thereof are provided to select and output a channel of a channel map having effective channels so as to play the media file during the long time auto channel search and to prevent a user from feeling bored. It is checked whether an auto channel search operation is started(S210). A pre-stored media file is transmitted to an image signal processing part or a sound signal processing part and is played through a display part or a speaker(S220). It is judged whether the auto channel search is finished(S230). When the channel search is finished, the media file play is finished(S240). A message of informing a user of the channel search finish is generated and overlapped with the image signal outputted through the image signal processing part(S250). One channel is selected and outputted from a channel map having effective channels stored in a storage part(S260).
