An image signal inputted from an image signal input unit (12) is introduced to LPF (14, 16) having different frequency response characteristics so as to remove a color signal component. A feature amount calculation unit (20) calculates an edge amount, color saturation, and a hue. A weight coefficient calculation unit (22) obtains a weight coefficient k from the feature amounts calculated by the feature amount calculation unit (20) and a change amount of them. According to the weight coefficient k calculated by the weight coefficient calculation unit (22), a weighted adder (24) performs weighted addition so as to frequently use an LPF (14) for passing a high-frequency component in an achromatic color portion or a chromatic color portion with a small color saturation and a small hue change and to frequently use an LPF (16) having few false signals in a chromatic portion with color saturation and a hue change. Upon reception of an output signal from the weighted adder (24), a horizontal contour correction unit (26) generates a horizontal contour correction signal. This suppresses the circuit scale and enables a user to obtain a high-quality image having a high resolution and few false signals.
