This invention provides a method for manufacturing a cast iron member, which can reduce the occurrence of gas defects such as blowholes or pinholes in an overlay layer formed on the surface of a cast iron material and can suppress the occurrence of bead cracking in the overlay layer. The method for manufacturing a cast iron member comprises the step of irradiating an overlay material with a laser beam from a laser irradiating apparatus to melt the material and deposit the melted material onto a part of the surface of the cast iron material to form the overlay layer. A material composed mainly of a copper element is provided as a material for the overlay, and the step of forming the overlay layer is carried out so that a quenched layer with a thickness of 0.01 to 2.0 mm is formed on the surface of the cast iron material upon the formation of the overlay layer.
