PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of achieving stable combustion by restraining a temperature drop in an inner wall and an intake valve of an intake passage. SOLUTION: Sub-ports 33 are each arranged so that a downstream end opening 33a points to the back of an umbrella part of the intake valve 9 in the intake passage 5e for respective cylinders 4a to 4d. An upstream end opening 33b of each of the respective sub-ports 33 is connected to an exhaust passage 16, and EGR gas from the exhaust passage 16 is introduced near the back of the umbrella part of the intake valve 9 of each of the resting cylinders 4b and 4c via the sub-port 33.
