PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately correct a focusing result of a phase difference detection system by means of a contrast detection without impairing high speed focusing performance of the phase difference detection system. SOLUTION: The imaging apparatus includes: an imaging element; a first focusing section, which splits a luminous flux passed through the exit pupil of a photographic lens and detects a phase difference of a subject image formed by the luminous fluxes obtained after splitting; a second focusing section, which focuses the photographic lens based upon information about the contrast of an image sequentially imaged by the imaging element; a storage section, by which the information about the contrast of the image sequentially imaged by the imaging element is stored while driving the imaging lens to the focusing position based on a focusing result obtained by the first focusing section; and a correcting section by which the focusing result obtained by the first focusing section is corrected based upon the focusing result obtained by the first focusing section and the focusing result detected by the second focusing section based on the information stored in the storage section.
