The device (1) has a filling unit (2), into which container (5) to be filled is inserted. The filling unit exhibits a filling equipment (6), which fills a fluid medium in the container. A closing device (8) closes the container after filling. A measuring device (10) is provided downstream concerning the closing device for determining characteristic variable for the geometrical form of the container. The measuring device has a collimation device (9) for collimation of light rays. An independent claim is also included for a method for filling the container.
