Liquid crystal display device operating in a vertically aligned mode

A vertically-aligned liquid crystal display device includes a liquid crystal layer (12) sandwiched between a pair of glass substrates (11A, 11B), wherein a retardation of the liquid crystal layer is optimized in a range between 80 nm and 400 nm. Further, the use of retardation films adjacent to the liquid crystal layer and its optimization are also disclosed.
