A system and a method for managing a phone book stored in a mobile terminal are provided to enable a terminal user to check an exact firm name or a person's name corresponding to a specific phone number through a phone number DB if the terminal user knows only the specific phone number, thereby registering items associated with the specific phone number in the phone book conveniently. A system for managing a phone book stored in a mobile terminal(100) comprises a phone number DB(122), a phone number server(120), and the mobile terminal. The phone number DB stores a phone number table and detailed information about the other party corresponding to each phone number. The phone number server searches detailed information about the other party corresponding to the phone number DB using information included into a request message as a message for requesting the provision of the detailed information about the other party is received, and transmits the searched detailed information to the mobile terminal. The mobile terminal includes information inputted by selection for automatic phone number registration into the message, transmits the message to the phone number server, and displays the detailed information about the other party transmitted from the phone number server.
