An apparatus and a method for driving an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to maintain the consumption power constantly regardless of the display image. An image display member includes liquid crystal cells formed at every area defined by plural gate lines and data lines. A back light(4) irradiates the light to the image display unit by means of plural lamps arrayed in parallel to each other and plural LED(Light Emitting Diode) arrays having plural LEDs arrayed between the lamps. A driving circuit unit(6) displays the input data from the outside to the image display unit and divides the image display member into plural blocks. The driving circuit unit produces plural dimming signals and plural LED dimming signals according to the summing gradation of the maximum gradation at each block. A back light driving unit(8) drives the back light according to the lamp dimming signal and the LED dimming signal.
