A method and an apparatus for recovering a symbol timing in a WLAN are provided to simplify a symbol timing recovery process by recovering the symbol timing without calculating a matched correlation for respective transmission modes in the WLAN system. An apparatus for recovering a symbol timing a WLAN(Wireless Local Area Network) includes a separator(611), a matched correlation calculator(612), a detector(613), and a FFT(Fast Fourier Transform) module(620). The separator separates a received signal sequence and a reference training sequence into plural groups according to a sequence number. The matched correlation calculator calculates matched correlation values for the respective groups according to the sequence number. The detector detects a boundary of a symbol based on the calculated result from the matched correlation calculator.
