PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the thickness deviation of a transfer member caused by an amount of toner stuck to the transfer member. SOLUTION: In a color image forming method, provided with a plurality of photoreceptors, by which a color image is formed by forming toner images on the photoreceptors and transferring the toner images to an intermediate transfer belt so that they are superposed one on another, a toner mark pattern that is uniform in an amount of attached toner is formed over the entire circumference of the intermediate transfer belt (step S101), the toner mark pattern is detected by a sensor that detects an amount of attached toner, and the amount of attached toner is calculated (step S102). In addition, a spot where there is a difference between a set value for an amount of attached toner and the measurement value of the measured amount of toner is assumed as a spot where the thickness deviation of the intermediate transfer belt is large (step S105), and image formation is carried out avoiding the spot where the thickness deviation is large (S106).
