Disclosed is a separator for alkaline batteries, which prevents internal short-circuiting, while lowering the electrical resistance of the separator itself by suppressing dendrite growth on the negative electrode. Specifically disclosed is a separator for alkaline batteries, wherein a nanofiber layer containing a modified polyvinyl alcohol polymer and a base layer composed of a wet nonwoven fabric of an alkali-resistant fiber are laminated and integrated. The nanofiber layer has a fiber diameter of 10-1000 nm and a fiber content liquid absorption after being immersed in 35% aqueous KOH solution of 4.0-40.0 g/g.
