PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of performing high-quality printing at high precision without generating deviation in an image in the reciprocating movement of a print head. SOLUTION: This printer 10 comprises a carriage 22 that has the print head 21 and is movable in a main scanning direction perpendicular to a conveyance direction of a sheet, first and second linear scales 31 each being extended in the main scanning direction and having a pattern formed thereon, first and second sensors 33 each for reading the pattern formed on the respective linear scales 31 fixed to the carriage 22, and a control section for controlling ejection of ink by the print head 21 according to the patterns read by the sensors 33. The first and second linear scales 31 are respectively provided to the upstream side and the downstream side of the carriage 22 in the conveyance direction of the sheet, and the first and second sensors 33 respectively read the patterns formed on the first and second linear scales 31.
