<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent running-out of hot water in a heat pump water heater and to improve energy efficiency regardless of use patterns in hot water supply. <P>SOLUTION: This heat pump water heater 100 comprises a heat pump refrigerant circuit 90 and a hot water storage tank 21 for storing the water heated by the heat pump refrigerant circuit. The hot water produced in the heat pump refrigerant circuit and the hot water stored in the hot water storage tank can be supplied to hot water supply terminals 19, 36a. When the stop of the supply to the hot water supply terminal is within a prescribed time from the start of the operation of the heat pump refrigerant circuit, when the heat pump refrigerant circuit is operated and the produced hot water is supplied to the hot water supply terminal, the operation of the heat pump refrigerant circuit is continued.
