A piston (1) for a two-stroke internal combustion engine of the crosshead type has a piston crown (2) and a piston skirt (3). The piston crown comprises a piston top and a piston sidewall with ring grooves for piston rings (12). The piston skirt (3) is a separate part mounted in extension of the piston sidewall. The piston skirt covers an upper portion of a piston rod (4) when the piston is mounted on the piston rod. The outside surface of the piston skirt (3) is provided with a coating (30) based on molybdenum.
