An apparatus and a method for detecting a shift stage using a hydraulic switch is provided to control turning on/off of a lamp of a shift stage on an instrument board by using a TCU and a cluster circuit. A manual valve(104) is positioned in a valve body(102) of an automatic transmission, and moves to generate operation pressure every shift stage. Plural switches(106) are installed on a fluid passage of each shift stage of the manual valve. A TCU(Transmission Control Unit)(108) is connected to the switch to detect on/off switching signal. A cluster circuit(112) receives a signal from the TCU to turn on/off a lamp of the shift stage on an instrument board. The switch is a hydraulic switch.
