PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an operating method of a shaft furnace and an in-furnace pulverization preventive apparatus applicable even when using any kind of coke, and capable of sufficiently suppressing pulverization of coke to be charged in a shaft furnace such as a blast furnace, and realizing the smooth and stable operation of the shaft furnace. SOLUTION: In one operating method of the shaft furnace, coke is separated into lump portions and pulverized portions by applying the friction force to the surface of coke, and the separated lump portions are charged in the shaft furnace for use. In the other operating method of the shaft furnace, coke is separated into lump portions and pulverized portions by turning coke in a rotary drum, and the separated lump portions are changed in the shaft furnace for use. An in-furnace pulverization preventive apparatus is used for charging the coke in the shaft furnace, and comprises a rotary drum 1, a sieving device 2 for sieving the coke discharged from the rotary drum 1, and a charging device 11 for charging the oversize sieved by the sieving device 2 from an upper part of the shaft furnace 16.
