PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a road sign reading device accurately reading a road sign such as characters drawn on a road surface with a simple configuration. SOLUTION: A detection device 10 is configured of a plurality of detection units 1, and installed under the floor of a vehicle. The detection unit 1 is configured of a light source (LED) 11 and a light detector (sensor) 11 corresponding thereto. Each of the detection units 1 is arranged in the width direction of the vehicle. Each of the light sources 11 emits the rays of light to a road in a predetermined cycle according to the control of a reading control part 6. Each of light detection units 12 detects the rays of light acquired when the rays of light emitted from the corresponding light source 11 in the predetermined cycle are reflected on the road, and outputs it as a detection signal. A road sign recognition means (7) recognizes a road sign based on the detection signal from the light detector 12 acquired when the rays of light are emitted multiple times from the light source 11.
