The vehicle-mounted (4) system to detect the positions (P1,P2) of objects, and especially pedestrians, has an array of thermopiles to detect their heat. They are assembled into data sets with at least two displaced thermopile arrays (3a,3b) into a linear measurement data vector. Objects are identified by comparison of the measurement data vector profile for a match with stored and/or a pedestrian model reference data set.
