<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display apparatus suitable for extending a luminance dynamic range and making a displayed image high in image quality. <P>SOLUTION: The image display apparatus PJ1 is equipped with first optical modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R for modulating the light from a light source 10, and a second optical modulating element 100 for modulating the light from the first optical modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R, and is constituted so that the light from the light source 10 may be modulated by two steps and the image may be displayed based on display image data. A polarized light changing element 23 uniformly changing the light from the light source 10 to specified linearly polarized light is arranged between the light source 10 and the first optical modulating elements 60B, 60G and 60R.
