PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid ejector which is equipped with a cleaning device capable of enhancing a cleaning function by realizing effective wiping depending on the situation, and an image forming apparatus using the liquid ejector. SOLUTION: This liquid ejector comprises: a wiping means 27 which has a blade member 90 for wiping and cleaning an ejection port surface of a liquid ejection head 50; scanning movement means 92b, 98 and 99 for relatively displacing the blade member 90 with respect to the ejection port surface; an ejection abnormality detecting means for detecting an abnormality in ejection from the ejection port; a stain state identifying means for identifying the state of stain on the ejection port surface; an abutment pressure control means for performing control for making the pressure of the abutment of the blade member 90 on the ejection port surface higher than predetermined abutment pressure, when the abnormality of the ejection and the adhesion of fixed matter onto the ejection port surface are detected; and a cleaning control means for performing at least either of a pre-ejection operation and the operation of sucking in a liquid in the liquid ejection head, when the abnormality of the ejection is detected and the adhesion of the fixed matter onto the ejection port surface is not detected.
