PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vacuum cleaner capable of sufficiently securing a dust collecting space in a dust collecting container before cleaning, them performing the cleaning. SOLUTION: The vacuum cleaner includes: an electric blower 2; a dust collecting container housing part (not shown in figure) on which a dust collecting container (not showed in the figures) to collect dust is detachably mounted; a compressing plate 30 placed in the dust collecting container to compress the collected dust; and a control means 52 to control the motion of the compression drive means 55 to drive the compressing plate 30. The compression drive means 55 is at least once actuated in a period from putting on power to starting the motion of the electric blower 2. Thus power consumption of the electric blower 2 is suppressed by directly compressing dust in the dust collecting container 4 to extend life of the electric blower 2 and enable even dust having small change in air flow rate, such as cotton dust to be securely compressed. By compressing dust upon putting on power, a space for dust is sufficiently secured in the dust collecting container 4 before cleaning without requiring disposing of dust immediately after cleaning and make the cleanser convenient.
