PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmission system and transmission apparatus attaining improvement in operational convenience by reducing labor and time required for setting work for network operation. SOLUTION: In each of transmission apparatuses 100, a unique bit stream is inserted into J0 bytes of an SDH frame to be sent from a transmission port, and a bit stream of the J0 bytes contained in a received SDH frame is detected at each transmission apparatus 100. Both the inserted J0 byte bit stream and the detected bit stream are reported to a monitoring device 200. Thus, a connection relationship is recognized for each path of each transmission apparatus 100 in the monitoring device 200 and on the basis of a result thereof, network configuration information is generated. The network configuration information is then transmitted from the monitoring device 200 to each transmission apparatus 100 and stored in a network configuration storage section 7.
