PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an alkyloxyhydroxydiphenyl sulfone, by which the alkyloxyhydroxydiphenyl sulfone useful as a developer for heat-sensitive recording materials can efficiently be obtained in high purity and in high yield in mild conditions without requiring troublesome purification. SOLUTION: This method for producing the alkyloxyhydroxydiphenyl sulfone represented by general formula [2] (R<SP>1</SP>is a 2 to 8C unsaturated hydrocarbon group; R<SP>2</SP>is a 2 to 8C alkyl) is characterized by hydrogenating an unsaturated hydrocarbon represented by general formula [1] with a hydrazine compound and an oxidizing agent.
