METHOD AND APPARATUS OF NOISE VARIANCE ESTIMATION

A method and an apparatus for estimating noise variance are provided to obtain a stable estimation for the noise variance even when a channel changes more rapidly than an interval of a pilot symbol by estimating the noise variance without using a result of a channel estimation or higher order statistics for a channel. A method for estimating noise variance in a multi carrier communication system comprises the following steps of: receiving a first symbol vector of a frequency domain; creating a second symbol vector by setting a symbol except for a receipt pilot symbol in the first symbol vector as 0(210); converting the second symbol vector of the frequency domain to a sample vector of a time domain(220); and estimating noise variance using the sample vector of the time domain. The step of estimating the noise variance comprises the following steps of: extracting a noise sample of a period in which a signal component does not exist, from the sample vector of the time domain(230); and calculating the variance of the extracted noise sample(240).
