A brush apparatus for a vacuum cleaning machine comprises a rotatable brush member 30, a driving unit 40 to drive the agitating brush member 30, and a blocking unit 50 disposed between the brush member 30 and the driving unit 40 to selectively block a driving force transmitted between the brush member 30 and the driving unit 40. The driving unit 40 includes a suction motor 41 to generate a suction force, and a single continuous connecting belt 42 connecting the suction motor 41 and the blocking unit 50. The blocking unit includes a blocking part 55 and a power transmitting part 51. An operating lever 56 forms part of the blocking part 55 and when in a first position, the lever allows bearing member 53 to make contact with a member 54 on the brush causing it to rotate. When the lever 56 is in a second position (figure 5) the bearing 53 is caused to come out of engagement with the member 54 causing the brush member 30 to stop rotating. |
