Brake equipment for holding and braking a lift cage of a lift installation and a method of holding and braking the lift installation are provided to need minimum vertical force for holding and minimum actuators for releasing or inactivating the brake equipment. Brake equipment for holding and braking a lift cage of a lift installation includes a mount and a first tightening unit(3). The mount has a braking lining(2,5) and is released by an actuator(4). The first tightening unit, the mount, and the brake lining are biased to a brake track(1) by biasing force. When the brake equipment is stopped, the brake lining generates holding force acting in two moving directions. The holding force is substantially determined by the biasing force. When the brake equipment is in an unreleased activation state and relatively moved in at least one of the two moving directions, a part of the brake lining is automatically tightened by the first tightening unit to apply tightening force to the mount and the brake lining so that brake force in an opposite direction to the moving direction of the brake equipment is generated. The brake force is substantially determined by the tightening force.
